Jennifer heard footsteps and then a knock on the door. She put the video on pause.

“Come in,” she said.

Dr. Rice walked to her bed, a smile on her face. “Are you ready for some good news, young lady?”

“I heard everyone cheering. What happened?”

“Blake Thomas is wide awake. His fever’s gone, and we’re taking him out of isolation. He made it!”

Jennifer laughed and cried at the same time. “Oh, my! That’s—that’s so great! What about Melissa?”

“Not yet, but we’re hopeful. This is the most encouraging thing that’s happened. I wanted to deliver the news personally.”

“Thank you, Dr. Rice!”

“I’ll check back later. I have to be in a meeting in five minutes.”

“Don’t they ever let you out of here?” Jennifer said.

Dr. Rice smiled. “Maybe now I can spend a little more time at home.”
